What Happens When You Stop Using Steroid Cream?

Many people who use anabolic steroids are aware of the dangers of taking them, and believe that by taking the drugs in certain ways they can avoid side effects. Or they may take additional medicines to try to counter the side effects. Your doctor may advise you to take drugs called bisphosphonates, or calcium and vitamin D supplements, along with the steroids to help prevent this. Regular exercise, especially things that involve your bones carrying the weight of your body, such as walking, can also help to reduce the risk of getting osteoporosis.

Topical corticosteroids treatment pathway

When used correctly, topical corticosteroid medicines are safe and effective treatments for skin disorders. Correct use includes using these medicines to treat certain skin conditions for short periods of time, or with short breaks in treatment over an extended period. However, given the number of patients who use topical corticosteroids, we understand reports of severe withdrawal reactions to be very infrequent.

• They can also be imported or exported, as long as this is carried out in person.
• In essence, simply following the course of treatment prescribed to you, not exceeding the recommended dosage, frequency, or duration, will leave you fairly unlikely to develop topical steroid withdrawal.

Emollients are the mainstay of therapy and without them it is not possible to manage eczema effectively. Good evidence shows that the more emollients are used, the less topical steroids are needed. Compliance is essential and so always review patients to check they are happy with what has been prescribed – it may be necessary to try a range of emollients before the patient settles on the best combination. Some people who take steroid tablets or injected steroids long term, may find they put on weight and notice they develop a “moon-shaped” face.

How much topical corticosteroid should be applied?

Occasionally a doctor may suggest using it less frequently over a longer period of time. Squeeze the topical steroid in a line from the last finger crease to the fingertip. One FTU would be sufficient to treat an area equivalent to two adult handprints.

Your healthcare team may give you a small card to carry with you while you are taking steroids. Topical steroid withdrawal (also known as TSW or red skin syndrome) is a condition that affects people who have used topical steroids extensively and then stop using them. The body appears to go through a period of ‘withdrawal’ because it had become reliant upon them to manage its inflammatory response. Unfortunately, this can cause an enormous amount of inflammation, usually much worse than the original problem that the steroids were employed to manage. People with atopic dermatitis are thought to be most at risk of developing topical steroid withdrawal reactions (Hajar and others, 2015).

You might have noticed this if you have had a cut or wound on your skin. But if you’re taking high doses for a long time, you may be at risk of some of the same side effects as steroid tablets. If you need two or more short courses of steroid tablets in a year, or your symptoms come back once you’ve finished the course, you should ask your GP for a referral to a specialist clinic. To prevent inflammation in your airways you need to use your steroid preventer inhaler every day, as prescribed.
